# Bukhara after dark

> Yes — the entire old city is illuminated from sunset to 23:00. Poi Kalyan, Lyabi-Hauz and the trading domes each have distinct lighting schemes. Best photography window is 30 min after sunset.

Bukhara's old city is lit theatrically each evening — the current lighting scheme was installed in 2019 as part of a UNESCO-funded old-town programme. Unlike some cities' "floodlight everything" approach, Bukhara's lighting is nuanced: warm accents on domes, cool wash on courtyards, dim streetlights on connecting alleys.

**Recommended after-dark walking route (~90 min)**:

1. **Start at Lyabi-Hauz** — the pond and surrounding madrasas glow from below, with the mulberry trees silhouetted against the tiled facades. Cafés stay open until 23:00.

2. **Walk east through Toki Sarrafon** (dome of money changers) — the interior arches are lit with warm gold from below. Souvenir stalls close ~21:00 but the dome remains illuminated.

3. **Continue north through Toki Telpak Furushon** and past the Ulugbek Madrasa (a Samarkand-style Ulugh Beg madrasa also exists in Bukhara).

4. **Poi Kalyan Square** — the climax. Kalyan Minaret is uplit from three angles; Kalyan Mosque's turquoise dome catches spot lights; Mir-i-Arab Madrasa's twin blue domes are back-lit. Best photography position: on the steps of Mir-i-Arab looking east across the plaza. Bring a tripod.

5. **Return via Ismail Samani Park** — the 10th-century mausoleum is subtly uplit and the surrounding park is a peaceful walk.

**Photography timing**:
- **Blue hour** (15–20 minutes after sunset) — the sky retains a deep blue tone that photographs beautifully against the warm building lights. Only about a 20-minute window.
- **True night** (after ~21:00 in summer, 19:00 in winter) — sky is black; buildings pop but photographs feel more artificial.

**Safety**: the old city is well-lit and safe to walk at night. Streets are quiet after 22:00 but not deserted.
