# Best photography spots in Samarkand

> Six key spots at specific times: Registan at sunset from the west, Shah-i-Zinda in early morning, Bibi-Khanym reflection at midday, Gur-e-Amir at blue hour, Siyob at 8 am, and Ulugh Beg Observatory in golden hour.

**1. Registan Square — sunset from the west**
The three madrasas face east, so the setting sun hits their west facades directly. Best position: stand on Registan Street, ~50 m west of the Ulugh Beg madrasa, wide-angle looking east. Time: 15 min before sunset, until civil twilight. In summer (June) this is around 19:30; in October, around 17:45.

**2. Shah-i-Zinda alley — sunrise**
The narrow alley is 100 m long and only 3 m wide, so light quality depends entirely on time. Go 30 min after sunrise. The eastern portals get the first light and the majolica tile turns cobalt-turquoise. Position: at the top of the 36-step staircase looking back down the alley. Empty until ~8 am.

**3. Bibi-Khanym Mosque — reflection at midday**
The interior courtyard has a large stone Qur'an lectern in the centre. Position: at the base of the main iwan, wide lens (16–24 mm) looking up. The reflection of the iwan in the polished stone is best around 11:00 when the sun is highest.

**4. Gur-e-Amir — blue hour**
The fluted azure dome is dramatically underlit at night, and the sky's deep blue at civil twilight (about 15 min after sunset) makes the dome pop. Position: park across from the entrance. Tripod needed.

**5. Siyob Bazaar — 8:00 am on a weekday**
Fresh produce being unloaded, women in bright headscarves at the bread stalls, men drinking tea. Ask before photographing individuals. Best for people photography over static architecture.

**6. Ulugh Beg Observatory — golden hour on the marble arc**
The 40-metre buried sextant reflects late afternoon light. Position: at the top of the excavation, looking down the trench. About 1 hour before sunset.

**Bonus — Hazrat Khizr Mosque overlooking Shah-i-Zinda**: a small terrace above Shah-i-Zinda offers a panoramic overview of the necropolis and city walls. Free entry with a small tip to the caretaker.
