# Suzani embroidery: buying the real thing

> Suzani are hand-embroidered textiles, traditionally part of a bride's dowry. Real hand-work has irregular stitching, slightly asymmetric patterns, and thread that lies flat but with visible knot texture on the reverse.

**Suzani** (from Persian *suzan*, needle) are large embroidered wall-hangings, bedcovers or wraps, traditionally made by a bride and her female relatives in preparation for her wedding. A dowry might contain 5–10 pieces, each taking weeks or months to complete.

**Regional styles**:
- **Bukhara** — floral, symmetrical, often with a central medallion and bright pomegranates and tulips. Silk on cotton ground. Densely stitched.
- **Samarkand** — bolder, more abstract, larger motifs. Often with red central roundels.
- **Nurata** — smaller pieces, cotton-heavy, floral bouquet motifs.
- **Shakhrisabz** — animal motifs (birds, camels) alongside flowers.
- **Fergana** — brightest and most polychrome, with the ikat-vocabulary applied to embroidery.

**Real vs machine-made**:
- Turn the piece over. Hand-embroidery shows a controlled but non-uniform reverse; machine work is perfectly regular and the back looks like the front.
- Look at symmetric motifs — hand-work has tiny variations between left and right; machine is exactly identical.
- Feel the thread. Silk floss lies flatter and has more sheen than cotton or synthetic.
- Modern hand-suzani may use synthetic dyes (bright colours that don't fade). Vegetable-dyed antique suzani are darker and slightly muted.

**Price ranges (2026)**:
- Small hand pieces (60×40 cm): $40–80.
- Mid-size hand pieces (1×1.5 m): $150–400.
- Full bedspread hand pieces (2×2.5 m): $600–1500.
- Antique (50+ years, verifiable): $2000+.

Best places to buy: Bukhara trading domes, small Samarkand workshops near Shah-i-Zinda, Khiva Ichan Kala.
