# Uzbek wedding traditions

> Yes — Uzbek weddings are famously hospitable and outsiders are often welcomed. Expect 200+ guests, six hours of food, live music, and formal dances. Bring a wrapped small gift.

Uzbek weddings (**to'y**) are the country's biggest social events, and hosts are proud when foreign guests attend. It's not unusual for tour guides to bring visitors to a family wedding in progress if the family agrees.

**Timing**:
- **Nikah (religious ceremony)** — held at the bride's home in the morning. Usually private, family only.
- **To'y (public reception)** — held at a wedding hall or restaurant, starting around 18:00 and running until 23:00. Foreign guests typically arrive at this event.

**What to expect at the to'y**:
- 200–500 guests seated at long tables.
- Continuous food service: fruit, salads, non, plov (always served), shashlik, dessert.
- Bottles of vodka, cognac, mineral water, cola on each table.
- Live musicians on stage — a **karnay** (long trumpet), doira drum, dutar lute, and singer.
- Speeches from elders, family, and any distinguished guest (that could be you).
- Bride and groom sit at a raised platform under a decorated arch. They eat little; guests approach for photos and small gifts.
- Dancing throughout, mixing traditional Uzbek dances and modern pop.

**Etiquette**:
- **Dress**: smart. Men in shirt and jacket; women in a knee-covering dress with sleeves. No shorts, no tank tops.
- **Gift**: an envelope with cash (~$20–50 equivalent in som) or a small wrapped decorative item. Envelopes are placed in a box near the couple.
- **Toasts**: at some point you may be asked to give a short toast. "May you have a long and happy life together — from a traveller who has been welcomed as family" is more than enough.
- **Alcohol**: if you don't drink, non-alcoholic mineral water is standard. Refusal is respected.
- Photography: freely welcomed. Sharing photos with the family after is a nice gesture.

**Wedding season peaks March–May and September–November** — you'll almost certainly encounter one during any 10+ day trip.
