# Overnight in a yurt at Aydarkul

> Traditional felt tents on the shore of Lake Aydarkul or beside desert fortresses — beds and dinner included, no electricity or hot showers, camel rides and stargazing at sunset. Usually one night.

The classic Uzbek yurt experience runs 1–2 nights at a fixed camp in the Kyzylkum desert, most commonly near Lake Aydarkul or at Ayaz Kala fortress complex.

**What a yurt is**: a domed felt tent stretched over a wooden lattice frame — the traditional dwelling of Turkic and Mongol nomadic peoples. A large yurt sleeps 4–6 on floor mattresses. Modern camps sometimes call them "yurts" but they're actually more permanent Karakalpak-style frame tents.

**A standard camp day**:
- **16:00** — Arrive after 4-hour transfer from Samarkand or Bukhara.
- **17:00** — Camel ride, usually 45 min out to a dune for sunset. Camels are Bactrian (two-humped) and gentle; ride at walking pace.
- **19:00** — Dinner in the communal dining yurt. Plov, shashlik, salads, non, green tea. Optional vodka.
- **20:30** — Campfire with a folk musician playing dutar (2-string lute) or dombra.
- **22:00** — Bed. If sky is clear, walk 50 m from the fire and watch the Milky Way — no light pollution for 100 km.
- **07:30** — Breakfast: eggs, cheese, jam, non.
- **09:00** — Depart, or optional lake swim / longer camel trek.

**Facilities**:
- Toilets: shared block, dry composting or basic plumbing depending on camp.
- Showers: cold-water bucket or, at better camps, hot water heated over the kitchen fire.
- Electricity: usually generator 19:00–23:00; USB charging in dining yurt.
- No wifi. Uzbek mobile signal patchy.

**Price**: $60–120 per person including transport, meals, camel ride, activities.

**Best months**: April–May, September–October. Midsummer 40°C+ makes yurts unbearably hot; midwinter −5°C requires heavy sleeping bag.
