# Dorus-Saodat: where Timur was meant to be buried

> In Shakhrisabz — a 14th-century mausoleum complex Timur commissioned as his family's dynastic burial site. Only his son Jahangir was ever interred here.

Dorus-Saodat ("House of Blessing") was built between 1379 and 1404 as the intended dynastic burial complex for Timur's family. It included:

- **Jahangir Mausoleum** — for Timur's eldest son, who died in 1376 at age 21, before completion. Jahangir's early death broke Timur's succession plan and reshaped Central Asian history.
- **Umar Sheikh Mausoleum** — for Timur's second son, killed in a hunting accident in 1394.
- **Timur's crypt** — a chamber built specifically for the emir himself. When Timur died in 1405 near the Kazakh border on his way to invade Ming China, his body was rushed to Samarkand and interred at Gur-e-Amir instead, because it was winter and the mountain pass to Shakhrisabz was snowed shut. The Dorus-Saodat crypt is therefore empty — you can still descend into the hidden underground chamber, discovered by archaeologists only in 1963.

Jahangir's mausoleum has a distinctive **fluted azure dome** on a tall drum — the prototype for the later Gur-e-Amir in Samarkand. The dome's engineering solutions were tried out here before being scaled up.

The complex is a short walk from Ak-Saray. Together with the neighbouring **Kok-Gumbaz Mosque** (1435, funded by Ulugh Beg) and **Dorut-Tilyavat** tombs, the four monuments form Shakhrisabz's UNESCO-listed core, inscribed in 2000.
