# Termez: Uzbekistan's southernmost city

> Termez is off the standard tourist trail — a Silk Road city on the Afghan border with Buddhist archaeology, active Sufi shrines, and a semi-tropical climate.

Termez sits on the north bank of the Amu Darya, directly across from Balkh in northern Afghanistan. Its climate is closer to Kandahar or Peshawar than to the rest of Uzbekistan — subtropical, with mild winters and 45°C+ summers.

The city has been continuously inhabited for 2,500 years and has passed through:
- **Achaemenid Persian** (5th–4th c. BCE) — earliest walls.
- **Greco-Bactrian** (3rd–2nd c. BCE) — Hellenistic culture after Alexander.
- **Kushan Empire** (1st–3rd c. CE) — Buddhist monasteries.
- **Sasanian and Hephthalite** (4th–6th c. CE) — Zoroastrian revival.
- **Arab Islamic** (from 705 CE) — became Termez as we now know it.
- **Timurid** (14th–15th c.) — decorative architectural phase.
- **Bukharan and Russian** rule to 1991.

Top sites, in the order most people visit:
1. **Termez Archaeological Museum** — the best introduction, with finds from all periods.
2. **Fayaz-Tepa** and **Kara-Tepa** — Buddhist monasteries.
3. **Zurmala Stupa** — 15-metre pyramid, contemporary with the monasteries.
4. **Sultan Saodat** — Sufi cemetery.
5. **Al-Hakim al-Termezi shrine** — the tomb of a 9th-century Sufi mystic.

Termez is a full day trip from Samarkand (5 hrs each way by road) or 90 minutes by plane from Tashkent. A single overnight is sufficient for most visitors.
