# Sultan Saodat: 900 years of Sufi tombs

> A cemetery complex on Termez's outskirts containing tombs of Sayyid dynasty rulers and Sufi masters spanning the 11th to 17th centuries.

Sultan Saodat is the burial ground of the Termez Sayyids — a lineage claiming direct descent from the prophet Muhammad through his grandson Husayn. The family ruled Termez as semi-independent lords under successive empires from the 9th to the 17th century.

The complex covers about 6 hectares and contains ~50 individual tombs, mausoleums and mosques. The oldest structure is a small mausoleum from the 11th century (Karakhanid period); the newest dates to the 17th century (Ashtarkhanid).

Layout: a central paved avenue about 200 m long, lined on both sides with tomb pavilions. The pattern of pairs — a small mausoleum on the left facing another on the right — represents the paired burials of Sufi masters and their spiritual successors.

Notable structures:
- **Sayyid Amir Kulal mausoleum** (14th c.) — the founder-figure of the complex. He was the spiritual advisor of Bahauddin Naqshband, founder of the Naqshbandi Sufi order.
- **The gilded iwan** — a 17th-century structure with fragments of gold-leaf muqarnas surviving on the ceiling.

Sultan Saodat is still an active pilgrimage site. Local families visit on Thursday evenings and Fridays. Foreign visitors are welcome anytime; dress conservatively and remove shoes before entering the shrine chambers.
