# Surviving Uzbek summer

> June–August routinely hits 40°C+. Sightsee 07:00–11:00 and 17:00–20:00. Break in a chaikhana or hotel for the midday 12:00–16:00 window.

Central Asian summers are hot, dry and long. Peak temperatures in the tourist cities:

| City | Peak (°C) | Nights (°C) |
|---|---|---|
| Bukhara | 42 | 22 |
| Termez | 45 | 25 |
| Tashkent | 40 | 20 |
| Samarkand | 38 | 18 |
| Khiva | 44 | 22 |

The heat is **dry** — humidity typically 15–25%. Better than tropical humid heat, but dehydration risk is much higher because you sweat and don't notice.

**Strategies**:

**Time of day**:
- Sightsee **07:00–11:00** — cool, soft light for photos, sites nearly empty.
- Rest **12:00–16:00** — hotel, chaikhana, museum, air conditioning.
- Sightsee again **17:00–20:00** — golden hour is spectacular.
- Evenings 20:00+ — outdoor dinner, temperature drops 5–10°C.

**Hydration**:
- Minimum 3–4 litres water per day.
- Add rehydration salts (Regidron packets from any pharmacy) if you're feeling headachey or dizzy.
- Local remedy: **kok choy** (green tea) hot, all day. Sounds paradoxical but works — hot tea induces sweating and evaporative cooling.
- Avoid alcohol during the day — it accelerates dehydration.

**Clothing**:
- Loose light cotton or linen. Long sleeves for sun protection are better than bare skin under direct desert sun.
- **Wide-brim hat** essential.
- Sunglasses with UV protection.
- Light scarf for women (mosque access + neck cover).

**Sunscreen**:
- SPF 50 minimum. Apply every 2–3 hours if exposed.
- Available in Uzbek pharmacies but selection is limited; bring your preferred brand.

**Warning signs**:
- Stopped sweating in heat: heat stroke, medical emergency.
- Severe headache + confusion: rest immediately in AC.
- Dark yellow urine: dehydrated, drink water immediately.
