The Khorezm region between the Amu Darya river and the Kyzylkum desert was one of the oldest Zoroastrian centres in the world. From the 4th century BCE onwards, its rulers built fortresses to control the caravan routes and irrigation systems that supported an agricultural civilisation.
Over 50 fortresses ("kalas") survive as ruins, most as mud-brick walls up to 15 m high standing in featureless steppe. They were abandoned after the 7th-century Arab conquest and gradually reclaimed by desert.
Ayaz Kala ("Wind Fortress") is the most-visited: a hilltop citadel above two smaller fortresses on the plain below. Layout: - Ayaz Kala 1 (4th c. BCE) — the main hilltop fortress, with 10 m walls and defensive galleries. - Ayaz Kala 2 (6th–7th c. CE) — a smaller garrison fortress on lower ground. - Ayaz Kala 3 — a nobleman's fortified residence.
Beside the fortress complex is a small yurt camp (~10 traditional felt tents, run by a local Karakalpak family) offering overnight stays with camel rides at sunset and campfire dinners. Book through Nukus tour operators; expect $60–100 per person including transport.
Other notable Khorezm fortresses (all a 20-min to 2-hr drive from Ayaz Kala): Toprak Kala, Kyzyl Kala, Guldursun Kala. A full-day 4x4 loop can cover 4–5 sites.
Best from March–May and September–October; midsummer temperatures on the hilltops exceed 45°C.
