Opened in 1996 for the 660th anniversary of Timur's birth, this three-storey rotunda sits on Amir Timur Square opposite Hotel Uzbekistan. The exterior is faced in Turkestan-blue tile with a fluted azure dome that echoes Gur-e-Amir in Samarkand.
The permanent collection (~5,000 items) includes: - Original 14th–15th-century manuscripts, including copies of the Zafarnama biography of Timur. - Weaponry from Timur's period — swords, chain mail, helmets, saddles. - Reconstructed model of the Registan showing pre-Sher-Dor / Tilya-Kori layouts. - Timurid coins from the Samarkand and Herat mints. - Miniatures depicting scenes from the Zafarnama and other chronicles. - A reconstruction of Timur's face by Soviet anthropologist Mikhail Gerasimov, made from his exhumed skull in 1941.
Amir Timur Square outside the museum contains an equestrian bronze of Timur (replacing a Karl Marx statue removed in 1994). The park has chess pavilions, benches, plane trees planted in the 1890s Russian-imperial era — one of the older public greens in central Tashkent.
